May 9, 2013 OUSD Blended Learning Event

There are currently four OUSD schools (Korematsu, EnCompass, Elmhurst and Madison) fully engaged in the Blended Learning pilot. Blended Learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace. This also means that teachers have the ability to work with small heterogeneous groups. Blended Learning offers one very powerful way to transform teaching and learning. This event provides the opportunity to hear about lessons-learned so far and a platform for discussing how to truly prepare our students to be literate in the 21st Century. The outcome of this event is that teachers, principals and parents leave with tools to begin their own design thinking process.

May 8, 2013 OEA Membership Meeting, Bargaining Update, Resolution Vote and California Day of the Teacher Celebration

Thank you for your patience in dealing with an ever-changing bargaining landscape. While we held out the hope that May 8 would be a ratification meeting, it is now an informational meeting for members to get questions answered and to decide on next steps. AND a Day of the Teacher Celebration!

RESOLUTION TO BE VOTED ON MAY 8 click here

Wednesday, May 8, Oakland High
4:00-5:30 Membership Meeting
5:30-7:00, Day of the Teacher Celebration

This is your opportunity to get the information that you need to make decisions about how we address bargaining and membership issues. It is especially important to those sites without elected OEA Reps.

The current Bargaining Update will be available with information about OUSD's proposal to have Health Net members pay significantly more per month for their coverage. It will explain why health benefits are bargained as part of a district-wide Health Benefits Insurance Committee.

Your OEA Site Representatives unanimously adopted the Resolution Declaring the Current offer by the District unacceptable at Monday's Representative Council. TOMORROW, you get to vote! Join your colleagues at this important (but short!) meeting.

The District has also made no movement from their original compensation offer.
Come to the meeting to get the latest information and stay for Food and Live Music.

So many have shown your Bargaining Team support this year. Let's keep it up!

Sincerely,

Trish Gorham

April 30, 2013 - Locally Controlled Funding Formula

Locally Controlled Funding Formula

While it is still a legislative moving target, with a final version still unknown, the proposal to create a more equitable funding formula to provide needed resources to the most needy students would bring millions of dollars in additional funds to OUSD.

To receive the latest information and to participate in an action to support Governor Brown's proposal:

April 16, 2013 PUSH BACK THE CORPORATE EDUCATION AGENDA

Merit-based pay, test-based teacher evaluations, longer contractual workdays (without smaller class sizes), elimination of tenure, principals with even more power... Do any of these trendy education reforms make you nervous? If so, you are invited to join the

Radical Educator Study Group and ClassRoom Struggle

For a discussion about the NCTQ "Teacher Quality Roadmap" commissioned by GO Public Schools, that advocates for many of these policies to take root in Oakland schools.

Tuesday 4/16, 6-8:30pm @ 1236 23rd Ave, Oakland

RSVP to classroomstruggle@gmail.com if you would like us to order you LANESPLITTER pizza and salad (we're asking for a $5 donation to cover costs).

We will eat together, read sections of the report, and talk about how we can organize to prevent these corporate reforms from sneaking their way into our contract and schools.
